Lothar Baumgarten. Culture Nature
In the spaces of the GAM Video Library, a Homage to Lothar Baumgarten takes shape as part of TERZA RISONANZA. The artist, who died in 2018, was celebrated for his ability to intertwine aesthetic inquiry with profound anthropological and ecological reflection.
The selection of works on display – primarily photographs – documents his immersive experience in a Yanomami village in Venezuela, where he lived for over a year in the late 1970s.
In these images, landscape becomes narrative, nature becomes language, memory, visual and symbolic construction. The photographs do not merely reproduce what was seen, but instead open new perspectives, allowing multiple, layered meanings to emerge.
As in one of the artist’s renowned photographs, where a bowl of milk with a fragment of green jelly evokes, in transparency, an entire landscape, Baumgarten’s works interrogate the boundary between object and representation, between the visible and the imagined.
